Asparagus is a real luxurious crop to grow and if you have the room and a little patience, we'd definitely recommend it. It is one of the few vegetables that gets better with age. The older the crowns have been in the garden the more spears you get.
Here are a few tips on how to get the best from your plants:
- Always buy crowns rather than seed as they crop much quicker this way. With crowns you'll have a few spears to harvest the following year but with seed you'll be waiting for what might seem like an eternity!
- Keep the beds weed-free. Asparagus hates competition and with too many weeds around it it won't reward you with as many spears.
- Stop harvesting by late June as harvesting for too long will weaken the plant. Then allow the ferns to grow as these while photosynthesize throughout the summer helping to bulk up the crown ready for next year.
- Asparagus is a perennial plant so make sure where you plant it is where you want it to stay for many, many years.
