| Dear Al and Jo
We have of your Medium Vegetable gardens and this weekend we won 1st prize for our broad beans in the local show. Plus 2nd for our gooseberries and third for the potatoes - I think we should have washed them beforehand! We also won a 1st for our raspberry jam.
We are really getting into the growing your own!!! Thanks for all your help.

Thank you so much for your visit helping us to further develop our school garden. You will remember that I serious misgivings, in early spring, when we first discussed using the table beds to grow vegetables. I had visions of a weed infest mess with staff complaining of, 'yet another job to do.' Of course it has not been like that at all, in fact this is one of the best project we have ever done as a school. All the children in school were involved in planting, sowing, measuring, recording, tasting and eating!
The table beds are brilliant, last week we weeded and replanted one with its winter crop in about 30 minutes. The planting plan and the plants arriving by post takes all the hard work (and expertise, there are no gardeners on this staff) out of gardening. The results were fantastic, everything we sowed or planted grew and was harvested. You should have seen the sheer delight on the children's faces when they harvested the carrots and celery.
All four table beds are now planted with their winter crop. We have extended the project and have now got four raised beds in a corner of the playground so that we can grow a greater volume of vegetables that we can use in the school kitchen. Our aubergines are still growing, you did say that they would take so much longer as we are so far north, long gone are the peppers, basiI, peas and beans.
We are already looking forward to our winter crop but more so, the spring. Thank you for your continued advice and encouragement. I will keep you updated on our progress.
Kindest regards Shan Gallagher Headteacher |
| Hi All, Just to let you know that here at Faringdon Infant School we are thoroughly enjoying the Living Leaves gardening experience! The children tend the gardens daily and we are waiting in eager anticipation for our first harvest. It looks like the beetroot will be our first homegrown vegetable to be served at lunchtime :-) The potatoes, cabbages and broccoli are thriving as are the lettuce. I couldn't bear to waste any of the seedlings that have grown so have been merrily thinning and replanting in any available space. I think our crop will be over 100 in the end! Parents, carers and grandparents are very impressed with our efforts...we do of course give you full credit. There is no way this would have been possible without your fool proof guides. We hope to sell some of our produce to help fund next years crops but we also intend on eating as much as possible ourselves! Here are a couple of pictures, sadly they don't do the gardens justice at all and as you can see the pigeons have been munching on some of the cabbages! However, this is our first year and we are very pleased with the results so far :-) I'm sure we will get better in time! We are going to start a gardening club soon and also hope to get our grown ups growing too. We'll keep you updated on our progress. I wonder if you could tell me when your next open day is? I think it would be good for some of us to come and see how to do it properly!! Thanks again for all your guidance and support. We really appreciate it :-) Nicky Woolford Faringdon Infant School
